Spring Break in Costa Rica: Family Days Made Easy

Spring break in Costa Rica is exactly what you dream of after a long winter: sunshine, ocean, adventure, tropical nature, time outside, and a real sense that your family has gone somewhere and done something completely different.

Here in Las Catalinas, a walkable coastal town on Costa Rica’s north-Pacific coast, so much of that experience already surrounds you from the moment you wake up.

You can start the morning in your villa, walk to beaches Playa Danta and Playa Dantita, take to the trails through the tropical dry forest, join an activity from our weekly experience calendar, learn something distinctly Costa Rican, and still be back at the pool before the afternoon is over. Add a bucket-list surf lesson, canopy adventure, or sunset snorkel cruise, and suddenly spring break starts feeling like a whole collection of Costa Rica experiences woven into a single stay.

That’s what we love about family travel here: You’re not just “visiting Costa Rica”; you’re spending your days swimming in the Pacific, exploring nature, tasting local food, learning traditions, and enjoying the town around you, with your villa home base at the center of it all.

Spring Break Starts Just Outside Your Door

Breakfast at the villa might turn into a walk through Beach Town. From there, Playa Danta is waiting for a swim, a little sand time, or a morning beside the water. The trail network gives active families another direction to take, with routes through the tropical dry forest and Platforms where you can stop for views over the Pacific and town.

And because so much of Beach Town and the surrounding experience is walkable, your family can move through the day naturally. Coffee, the beach, lunch, trails, activities, and home can all become part of the same outing… And that makes spontaneity part of your spring break.

Maybe everyone heads to the beach after breakfast. Maybe the kids vote for the villa pool first. Maybe you take a walk through town and decide to stay out for lunch. Maybe someone spots something on the weekly experience calendar that sounds fun and the plan changes again.

You’re already here. The experience has already started. All you have to do is get out and enjoy it.

So Much Is Already Included in Your Las Catalinas Stay

Our rotating weekly experience calendar gives families even more ways to enjoy Las Catalinas together, with a selection of activities included as part of the experience fee.

The exact lineup changes, but that variety is part of what makes it fun. Depending on your dates, your family might paint pottery, learn to make Costa Rican tortillas, join a scavenger hunt, get in a round of tennis, gather for sunset s’mores, play pickleball, or take part in another cultural, culinary, wellness, sports, or outdoor experience.

127las-catalinas-doorway-santarena-costa-ricaHorseback riding is also part of the weekly experience program, giving families a chance to connect with Costa Rica’s long sabanero, or cowboy, tradition while experiencing the landscape from a completely different perspective.

Then there’s the sustainable farm tour, which can be especially fun with younger children. Meeting the animals, petting baby goats, collecting eggs from the chickens, and seeing how the farm works gives kids a tangible connection to rural life in Costa Rica.

That cultural element matters to us. Your family vacation can be full of fun and adventure, while giving you something to take home beyond the photos. Your children can leave knowing how a Costa Rican tortilla is made, remembering the feel of a baby goat in their arms, or understanding a little more about Guanacaste’s sabanero culture.

Those are small experiences, but they give your trip a real sense of place.

Add a Bigger Costa Rica Adventure

When your family is ready to build something bigger into the week, we can help you take the adventure further.

A hot springs and zip-lining experience can put everyone into the canopy and near an active volcano. A surf lesson can turn a beach morning into the day someone finally stands up on a board. A snorkel and sunset sail combines time on the Pacific with swimming, marine life, coastal views, and that final stretch of the day when the sky begins to change.

These are the experiences that can become family stories almost immediately: Someone was nervous before the first zip line. Someone caught the first wave. Someone spotted something underwater before anyone else. Someone stayed on deck for the entire sunset because they didn’t want to miss a minute of it. And you all had a blast.

We can help you choose which experiences fit your family, your children’s ages, your interests, and the way you want the week to feel.

Your Villa Becomes Part of the Family Adventure

Perhaps the most magical part of your time here? Every day, you get to return to your home-away-from-home. Your Las Catalinas Doorway flat or villa isn’t just where your family sleeps between activities; it can become a real centerpiece of your trip.

For a smaller family, that might mean a two-bedroom flat with plenty of character, a terrace, easy access to Beach Town, or ocean views that become part of breakfast. For larger families, our homes extend into four-, five-, six-, and seven-bedroom villas, with generous spaces designed for everyone to gather.

Some families want to be high in the hills, where terraces open to sweeping Pacific views and sunset becomes an event at home. Others love being close to the beach, where the walk from the water back to the house can take just minutes.

The personalities of the homes vary just as much. You might have a private pool where everyone cools off after a morning outside, a shaded courtyard for a slower afternoon, a rooftop terrace for drinks at sunset, a media room where cousins can disappear for a movie, or a dining table large enough for everyone to gather.

Select larger homes also include a dedicated Housemom who can prepare breakfast and light snacks using your groceries and help coordinate housekeeping. And if your family gathering is larger still, we can often help coordinate nearby villas so different branches of the family stay close to one another while having their own spaces.

However your family is configured, we’ll help you find the home that makes the stay feel like yours.

A Spring Break Day Can Be Whatever Your Family Wants

One of the best things about having so much built into your experience is that every day can take on a completely different shape.

You might spend one morning swimming at Playa Danta and the afternoon learning to make tortillas. Another day could begin on the trails, continue with lunch in town, and finish with sunset s’mores. Maybe you dedicate a day to zip lining, then come back to Las Catalinas, rinse off, and let everyone pile into the pool.

Or perhaps you all want one gloriously simple day: breakfast at home, a beach morning, lunch nearby, pool time at the villa, and dinner together as the sun goes down. Because spring break in Las Catalinas doesn’t follow anyone’s rules but your own.

Bring Home More Than a Spring Break Tan

Costa Rica has a way of giving families a lot to talk about after the trip is over.

Maybe your children remember learning to make tortillas. Maybe it’s their first horseback ride, first surf lesson, first zip line, or the baby goats at the farm. Maybe everyone remembers the sunset from the boat, the view from a Platform, or the afternoons when the entire family ended up around the villa pool.

That’s the kind of spring break we love helping families create. You get the beach, the tropical dry forest, the Pacific, the adventures, the Costa Rican culture, the weekly experiences, and a home that becomes part of your story.
